January News

We've got a HUGE event coming up! The next two months will be filled with planning, fundraising, and a whole lot of fun involving World Vision's 30 Hour Famine.

On January 24th (Sunday) from 1pm to 3pm we'll kick it all off! We'll do all our planning for the event (publicity, fundraising, sevice ideas, activities for the Famine, and more!) We'll watch some videos about the Famine, and about why it's important. We'll also talk about alternatives to fasting for 30 hours if someone can't do it.

Wait... did you just say fasting for 30 hours? I know the girls in our youth group think they can do it... What about the boys? Last I heard, a few were complaining about missing out on just one meal! Think you can handle the challenge? After our kick off party, you might change your mind about how you feel. Our famine will take place on Saturday, February 27th - where you eat lunch and then don't eat anything else that day. We get together around 6pm at church, spend the night together and the next day. Around 6pm on Sunday, February 28th, we'll be having a covered dish dinner with church to break our fast.

Important info about the fast - if you have a medical condition, or medication you MUST take with food - please let us know so we can accomodate you! Also, youth who are 11 years and younger should not fast for 30 hours. Our fast is a "juice fast" where we will drink juice and water through the event. Those who cannot fast for 30 hours will be provided with a small meal here and there throughout the event.

I can't wait to share this event with you and for you to participate!

September Wrap Up & October Schedule

September has been a great month for our Youth Group!

The Jr. Youth are very motivated, excited, and ready to get things started! I'm very happy to be working with them. They even enjoy youth group so much, that they have decided to meet twice a month, rather than just once a month! We worked on the Haunted House at our last meeting, sorting through all the props and decorations, as well as planning what each room will be in the Haunted House. We'll have a maze, a cemetary, and a witch's laboratory. Awesome job, everyone!

The Sr. Youth Group is lacking members! We're going to try to meet again in October and see where that takes us. We've been trying to think of ways to get other youth involved, but we seem to be oblivious as to what the answer is! We thought that going on a shopping trip with the Sr. Youth to buy decorations and supplies for the Youth Room would get some youth excited... So we'll try it in October!

Our meetings for October look like this:

Sun., Oct. 4th - Jr. Youth Meeting - 4th through 8th grades - 11am to 2pm
We'll be making baked goods together to help raise money for the church roof, we'll have a group discussion about forgiveness and sin, and do all the normal things we do at a meeting, too. Don't forget that we'll have lunch together, too!

Sun., Oct. 18th - Sr. Youth Meeting - 8th through 12th grades - 11am to 2pm
We'll be taking a trip to get decorations for the Youth Room, as well as supplies, and maybe fabric to cover pillows and furniture with. We're hoping for new, fresh ideas to make the Youth Room YOUR space! Bring your friends! We'll have lunch together before we leave, so don't eat before you come!

Fri., Oct. 23rd - Haunted House Set Up - After school to about 6:30pm
Bring your friends, family, siblings... Whoever you can! We need many hands to help transform the Fellowship Hall into our 6th Annual Haunted House!! If you think you'll get hungry in that time period, please bring something to eat, or cash to get something.

Sat., Oct. 24th - Haunted House - 9am to 4:30pm
This is it!! Wear dark clothes and shoes, long sleeves and long pants... We'll be putting on a Haunted House! We need help with the music, the props, the costumes, and running the Haunted House. Bring your friends - but be sure they are there at 9am! If they miss the training and practice runs, they won't be able to help! Make sure you plan to stay until 4:30 to help clean up, too. Lunch will be provided for everyone who helps. If you want to invite people to walk through the Haunted House, it's open from 10am to 3pm and costs $3/person!

September Schedule

Hello Everyone! Newsletters and Fundraiser Info are being mailed out tommorrow, August 27th. Here's a sneak peek of the schedule this September! If you ever lose your newsletter, you can always check back here.

Hope to see old and new faces this year! I'm very glad that 9 youth showed up to the Kick-off Party at Bend in the River!

First Jr. Youth Group meeting: September 6th (Sunday) from 11am to 2pm

First Sr. Youth Group meeting: September 13th (Sunday) from 11am to 2pm

Both meetings will be held in the Youth Room at Canton UMC... Enter through the glass doors on Chapel Street and follow the signs... Up two flights of stairs!

Right now, each group is meeting only once a month. If we have youth interested in meeting MORE than that, we can work that out. We plan on holding one event or fundraiser each month as well. This month, we are selling Little Ceaser's Pizza Kits. Our goal is to raise $500 and use some of the money to makeover our Youth Room. We will also set aside some money to attend 4Word '11, a gathering of United Methodist Youth from New York, Vermont, and parts of Pennsylvania.

During our first meeting, we will talk about the types of events our group is interested in, fundraisers we'd like to do, service oppourtunities we can do as a group, and we'll get to know each other. We'll tentatively plan our next year's schedule. We'll also have lunch together, do some "classic Youth Group stuff," and have a lot of fun. So bring friends, ideas, and smiles!
